5 Ways to Make Your Interior Design Look More Expensive

Many homeowners – us included – strive for a property that looks costlier than the furniture and ornaments that reside within it. Fortunately, when it comes to interior design, there are plenty of hacks that can be used to achieve a luxurious look for less.

Whether it’s taking a Pinterest-worthy picture and reinventing it with budget-friendly furniture, or adding a lick of paint to existing items, our tips will instantly add value to the appearance of your home.

Light Colours Look Luxurious

Neutral colours ooze elegance and expense, as well as make a room appear bigger.

When it comes to updating costly items – like floors, fixtures and furniture – consider choosing lighter shades, then adding bolder tones with accessories.

If you prefer richer coloured walls, ensure furnishings are paler, to balance out the room.

Tiles are also a good option for creating a minimal, costly look. If you have the budget, consider interspersing dashes of colour throughout a wall with a second tile design or colour.

Add Texture

Texture the walls to make them look more expensive

Use strips of moulding to add texture to walls. This budget-friendly technique, known as picture-framing, draws the eyes to certain areas. The trick is to keep spaces even and the edges aligned, to achieve a symmetrical look.

Extend this texture further by embellishing the area around a light fixture. Attach a lightweight, polyurethane ceiling medallion for an inexpensive, affluent feel.

Upgrade Your Lights

Modern Living RoomLights can have a significant impact on the look and feel of a room.

The improvements you opt for will depend on your budget, but generally, the bolder and more sophisticated, the better.

Modern chandeliers can be a focal point in any room – even bathrooms – especially if put in a central place, like above the dining table.

If a new fixture is out of budget, simply replace your lampshades with something more exciting.

Doors Are Important

As with lights, the impact doors can have on a room is incredible; an upgrade often immediately transforming your space into something more modern and pricey-looking.

If your doors look a little tired, consider updating them. If this is out of budget, paint them. Believe it or not, painting your doors black can instantly make a space look costlier, especially if the room is full of lighter tones. Don’t forget to add a few black accessories to the room too, to ensure it matches.

For smaller rooms, consider space-saving doors that slide or fold. This will declutter the space and allow for a minimal – and therefore pricier – appearance.

Learn to Accessorise

Relaxing bathroomA simple way to give your room a luxury feel is to ensure accessories match.

If you’ve accumulated random decorative items throughout the years – including mismatched ornaments and random Christmas gifts – think about replacing some of these.

Coordinating pieces gives a space a polished, tidy – and more expensive- look. This process applies to all rooms, so ensure that items in the bathroom complement each other too (think soap dish and toothbrush holder).

Pillows can instantaneously imply something is more expensive than it is. Designers often recommend opting for large cushions – at least 18 inches – and stuffing larger pillows into cases a few inches smaller.

Achieving a lavish looking home doesn’t have to cost a fortune. A little smoke and mirrors – the latter, sometimes literally – can enable your interior design to ooze luxury, without the added expense.

Time and budget will dictate whether your efforts simply involve a little re-accessorising, or complete redecoration, but even the smallest changes can help you accomplish a costly and cosy looking home.

Hackers Help: How to secure LINNMON + ALEX?

Hi colleagues, I need to secure a good firm and nice looking connection between a Linnmon top and an Alex drawer unit for my home desk.

As you probably know, Linnmon top is “almost” empty inside (is full with a paper “homecomb”) and does not have enough strength to use screws (except on corners).

IKEA version of the desk is quite loose and the top only sits over Alex. Any wrong move and your desk is not a desk any more.

And of course I would like that the connection will be nice looking too.

Thank you,

Security: A Priority in Your New Home?

Buying a new house will mean you have loads of things to think about, ranging from utilities through to future improvements. But one area many people completely neglect to consider is security, and it is perhaps one of the most important things any home can have. Even basic steps can help to ensure the safety of you and your family, so that you can have a happy and secure future together in your new home.

There are a number of things you can do to beef up your home’s security, and most of them are not too expensive at all. Fast Keys Lock Services have put together a selection of different ideas, so you can take the safety of your home to the next level.

Door Security

When we think of burglars, we usually have a picture of them entering through windows, but this is not accurate. Much of the time, they’ll gain access through insecure or weak doors, so these have to be shored up as a matter of priority. Often this can mean purchasing an entirely new door, which has the strength and robustness to withstand any intruder’s efforts. This is especially the case when it comes to back doors, which are traditionally weaker and also a more common point of entry than front doors.

Fitting a new lock is also a great way to help with door security, and it isn’t a particularly expensive process. You just need to make sure you get a lock with a British Standard Kitemark, as well as a BS361 cylinder lock, a TS007 3-star lock, or a SS312 diamond approved lock, as these are regarded as the best on the market. Adding bolts and chains is also a good way to bolster the strength of a door for relatively little cost.

Securing Windows

Windows are also a favourite way for burglars to gain entry to your home, and therefore they must be as strong as possible – especially ones on the ground floor and at the rear of the property. Two important things to ensure any window has are locks (you’d be surprised by how many people don’t have these) and laminated glass. The latter won’t shatter under pressure, and therefore makes it far more difficult for burglars to make their way past them.

It you have old, wooden-framed windows in your new property, it might be best to have them replaced completely. Newer UPVC and metal frames generally come with fantastic security already attached to them, so will give you great peace of mind.

External Security Features

Now that you’ve secured the entry points to your home, you can think about other ways to prevent and discourage intruders. Perhaps the best way to do this is by making the outside of your property particularly challenging for them. So, how about considering a CCTV system (they aren’t too expensive anymore), or adding some automatic lights to your external walls? The latter might not seem like a particularly important feature, however evidence shows that they are a great way to deter intruders.

Getting better fences is also a great idea, as intruders really don’t want the hassle of scaling a 6 foot one. They’d much rather head elsewhere and hop over a small fence, especially if they have their arms full of swag! Make sure these higher fences don’t simply act as ladders to your property though, so think about where you put them.

CCTV Cameras

Internal Security Features

Internal security features won’t stop a burglar from entering your home, however they might cause them to make a swift exit. The best of these is undoubtedly an alarm system, which will sound off loud and proud when it’s triggered, and can also be programmed to automatically notify the police if required. Internal CCTV can also be very useful, as it can be a great way to catch images of any intruders, therefore leading to a greater chance of them being caught.

Internal security isn’t just about protecting your home from intruders though – it’s also used to protect against fire as well. Perhaps the most important thing you can do when you move into your home is check the fire alarms and ensure that they are all working correctly, or even request a home fire safety visit from the local fire service (check your local brigade to see if they offer a similar service). You should also ensure that you have a carbon monoxide tester if you have an open fire in your home.

So, there you have it: a number of great ways for you to improve the overall safety of your new home. Most of them don’t take too long to install, however all of them will make you and your family sleep that much easier at night. Let us know your security tips in the comments below.
